Homemade Toner

This is my latest cosmetic creation – a toner of just 4 natural ingredients. I was inspired by a toner I saw in Kiehl’s a few months ago. Not to knock Kiehl’s, but it was very pricey and had a lot of questionable ingredients so I didn’t want to buy it.  I figured why not try to make my own version? So I did.. I decided that witch hazel (a great natural astringent) would be the base and then I added some dried burduck root (a blood purifier), chamomile flowers (calming & anti-inflammatory), and hibiscus flowers (high in Vitamin C & naturally provide the pink tint).

I gave my mom a sample of it recently and when she was starting to get low, she said she needed a replacement asap!  She had noticed such a difference in her skin since she started using it. I couldn’t be happier. I’m already thinking of some other blends that I’m going to try making, but for now I’m really loving this one.

  1. This is amazing!! If you ever start selling your products let me know. PS: What do you think about the Laura Mercier make-up? I use Bare Essentials and I’m starting to hear about the bad things it does to your skin. :(

Hi Jessica, I have heard good things about Laura Mercier makeup, but never used it personally. Some great natural brands I really like: Mineral Fusions, Dr. Hauschka, Honeybee Gardens, Aubrey Organics, and Lavera. Just let me know if you want links/more info! xo

  6. Okay – hellooooo on the Kiehl’s observation! I think the same thing – pricey and some most def questionable ingredients. Love what you came up with Annie! – Carrie :)

I know it’s a little late to comment on this post, but I had a question – how do you actually make it? do you just put all the ingredients in warm water? Do you boil them? And can you get them at any health store?

  12. Hi Arielle,
Thanks for your question! I simply combine about a tablespoon of each ingredient with the witch hazel. I found my ingredients at small healthstore that carries a lot of things in bulk. If you can’t find the ingredients in person, you could always order online!

I am so excited to try this, I have been thinking about a burdock toner for quite some time and I love your addition of hibiscus and chamomile! Two questions for ya…is it imperative to dry the burdock root or can I use it fresh? And do you peel your Burdock or let it go au natural? Thanks!

  14. Hi! Thank you for your question. I use dried burdock for this toner and I have never tried using fresh burdock, but I imagine you could use fresh and it would work out well! I think I would peel the Burdock so it infuses better into the witch hazel. Let me know how it goes! :)
