Top 12 to Buy Organic

In an ideal world, we could all afford to buy organic everything (if we so desired). Since most of us can’t, here is a list of the most important produce to buy organic, as well as the least important. According to the Environmental Working Group, consumers can reduce their pesticide exposure by 80% by going organic with “the dirty dozen” and sticking with conventional on the “the clean 15″. Let me say that one more time – 80%!! Great to know for the sake of your health and your wallet!

The Dirty Dozen:

  1. Celery
  2. Peaches
  3. Strawberries
  4. Apples
  5. Domestic blueberries
  6. Nectarines
  7. Sweet bell peppers
  8. Spinach
  9. Kale
  10. Cherries
  11. Potatoes
  12. Grapes (Imported)

The Clean 15:

(Makes sense – notice how most of these have a protective outer layer minus the asparagus & cabbage)

  1. Onion
  2. Avocado
  3. Sweet corn
  4. Pineapple
  5. Mango
  6. Sweet peas
  7. Asparagus
  8. Kiwi
  9. Cabbage
  10. Eggplant
  11. Cantaloupe
  12. Watermelon
  13. Grapefruit
  14. Sweet potato
  15. Honeydew melon

  1. Annie this is brilliant. I’ve wondered about this for some time, even though I do try to purchase organic. Excellent observation on the thicker skin thing, too!!

  6. Very good to know. But I always buy organic kiwi. Maybe I’m crazy but they just taste better to me. ;) I’m also weird enough to swear by Smart Water. I think it tastes better than all others. ;)

  7. So interesting. I knew about strawberries and grapes… I do buy a lot of organic, I just order online and have stuff delivered every week.

    so helpful! Thanks!

  9. Hooray! I love seeing this (it’s so perfect, after I posted organic thoughts yesterday :))…I’m no longer near a CSA, so I’ve relied on this kind of info. And buying all-organic is getting more and more affordable all the time!

  10. Thank you for posting this. A while ago I saw something on the news about this and was thinking about searching for the list before I went shopping today! How lucky.

  11. This is awesome, thank you for the list! It’s good to know that I don’t need to buy everything organic because it gets so pricy. Yes, let me know how the peanut butter cookies turn out. I might have to make them again this weekend, I’ve been craving them all week.

  12. Wow, Annie! Great list!

  13. So helpful! It’s so hard to know these days… I try to buy organic produce, but yes, very pricey. I’m planning to cut this cost out almost completely next summer with a full garden of “organic” veggies!

  14. Lauren, that is sooooo exciting! I can’t wait to see the garden! I can just see Milo & Oliver picking those veggies.. :)

  15. This is such a great list to hold on to! Thanks for sharing! I hope you have an incredible weekend!
