I know that many people take fish oil supplements these days so I thought you would all appreciate these 2 simple guidelines:
- Fish oil supplements should actually NOT smell fishy.
- After taking fish oil supplements, you ideally should NOT experience burping reminiscent of said oil.
**Also, make sure you are storing your supplements properly and taking them on a full stomach!
Some brands I would recommend:
Personally, I opt for this liquid Cod Liver Oil by Nordic Naturals because I would rather not deal with a capsule plus some say the supplement is better absorbed in liquid form. I will not kid anyone that it’s enjoyable, but at least it comes in orange, lemon, strawberry, or peach and it is definitely not fishy!

My husband takes fish oil from Nature Made, but I don’t. Not sure why…. I know they’re good for you. Next time I go to the market, I’ll look for those brands.

/ March 1, 2011Thanks for the information. The reason I’m not taking any fish oil is becasuse I really can’t stand the smell (good to know there isn’t any). Plus, I eat fish on a regular basis so I thought that should be enough?
Anyway, I’m hosting the Culinary Smackdown Battle on my blog. This month’s theme is COOKIES! (it doesn’t have to be a new creation, you can use a previous post on your site too) Would you please join us for the fun? I’m sure my readers would appreciate a more healthy alternative cookie recipe from you as well. I have some cool prizes waiting too.

/ March 1, 2011I know I’m supposed to be taking this… I know.. but the oil form makes me gag.. In fact, the sheer thought of it makes me gag… sigh… can’t I just spend my life eating copious amounts of fish? Fine, I’ll check out your recommendations and stop being a baby!

/ March 1, 2011This is good to know Annie because I do not take them for the very reason that they smell fishy! Looks like I just wasn’t taking the right ones. But since I’m not a huge lover of the capsules I am definitely going to try the liquid…xoxo

/ March 1, 2011Annie my memory rings with Cod Liver Oil I had to take in the hospital once from a less than nice nurse. I was 8 yrs old. I was traumatized. I spit the caps back in the cup and hid it in the top drawer of my metal nightstand that clanged when I tried to gently close it. She found me out. I wept.
I’m going to try to erase that memory and follow your advice. It may be a process though!
xo,

/ March 2, 2011I make sure the kids get plenty of fish and they take the Omega 3 every morning but I haven’t tried the oils. I will have to give it a try but hopefully they aren’t too fishy smelling…I have the worst gag reflex so strong smells don’t work well for me! Thanks for the great information!
xoxo

/ March 2, 2011Very interesting. I don’t know how brave I am… I know I should be much better about taking vitamins and supplements. So much to think about.

/ March 3, 2011I was taking fish oil for a while (using the nordic brand you suggested) and felt great. However, the taste was really rough to get past. So I decided that I would treat myself every time I took it and dealt with the horribleness of it all by enjoying a spoonful of Nutella immediately after taking the oil and washing down with water. That way as painful as it was to quickly gulp down the oil without vomiting I knew I was getting a delicious reward after! I finished the bottle and haven’t gotten another but maybe now I should.
On another note – I do LOVE flax seeds and really think that the oil helps so much with vibrant skin and hair. I also buy a Trader Joe’s almond butter with toasted flax seeds that’s yummy.

/ March 3, 2011I would definitely agree that it is better consumed in liquid form, rather than a capsule. I should probably add fish oil supplement to my daily routine.
