Undebatably Unnatural

On my way to work this morning, I was reading how new research has raised concerns about a link between drinking diet soda and an increased incidence of stroke/heart attack.  Specifically, the findings were that there was a 48% higher risk of stroke or heart attack among those who drank diet soda every day compared to those who didn’t drink any soda at all (full article).  It’s already being pointed out that this isn’t necessarily a simple cause and effect relationship. Well either way, I don’t think anyone should fool themselves into believing that ingesting straight-up chemicals (the stuff that makes a diet soda “diet”) can do anything good for the human body.

Personally, I’m not a soda drinker, but I can understand how some people really love the stuff – the sweetness, the bubbles, etc. If you’re looking to move away from drinking soda and want a healthy alternative, try some sparkling mineral water (I love San Pellegrino or Trader Joe’s brand) with a splash of your favorite juice or a squeeze of lemon/lime. Before you know it, you won’t even miss that diet (or regular) soda!

  1. Good Morning, Annie

Wow… I had no idea about this research! I knew diet soda is really bad for you. Honestly, I am a regular Coke lover, but I drink it only when I go somewhere and they don’t offer any other option. And in fact what helped me almost quit Coke was discovering how refreshing sparkling water with lime flavor is.

  2. I’m with you girl…sparkling water all the way! The T. Joes bottles are a staple in our house! Xo

  7. And there’s always good ol’ water! Sodas (diet or not) are terrible for your teeth as well, so I rarely drink them. We actually wrote an article a while back about how it can harm your teeth if you want to check it out:

Don’t Let Cavities Can You – Beware of Sodas

  8. I heard about this too. No surprise, right? I used to drink Diet Pepsi all the time but made the switch on over to Pellegrino years ago and seriously didn’t miss the diet soda one bit. :)

  9. This is such a great article. I don’t drink soda either but there was a time years and years ago that I did and it was Diet Pepsi. Thank goodness that was short lived!!! This article should be posted where they sell sodas, LOL! xoxo

  11. What your mom said…minus the pom juice? hehe

And I hear you on soda. I love a little pepsi, but not what it does to the waistline or the teeth. I had no idea about this link though. That’s down right scary!

  12. I have heard that diet soda is usually way worse too. I was always told to stay away from it as a kid. And it is good to stay away from aspartame which is the sweetener in diet sodas and most anything diet, as well as in most chewing gum. Aspartame is terrible for anyone and is especially bad for eyesight.
    I love Pellegrino too!!

  13. oh man!!! i just had one :(

  14. So true! I love it with orange juice!
