I don’t think any of us think about the freshness of eggs like we do about other things (milk, meat, etc), but the following simple test will help you figure out when to fry and when to toss…
How to:
- Place egg in a bowl of cold H20 and observe if it…
- drops to the bottom of the bowl & lies on its side = really fresh egg
- stands on end & bobs in the water = somewhat fresh
- clearly floats = it’s definitely old – toss it!

/ May 16, 2011I so needed to know about this a few weeks ago when I accidentally left my fridge open for like 12 hours. It was every so slightly opened but 12 hours was a long time. I ended up throwing out most things including the eggs…Will defintiely be giving this a shot.
Thanks for the tip, sweetie! xoxo

/ May 16, 2011Great info! Thank you! I find it interesting that years ago there were never dates on eggs or other products like soda for that matter. Now everything seems to have a sell by or use by date on it. This would be a good test for when it’s past the date, but not that far past. I know that they tend to be conservative when it comes to labeling.

/ May 16, 2011ooh this is good to know. when i moved to korea i was totally grossed out by the fact that eggs are sold on shelves and not from the fridge. i never knew that it wasnt essential to refrigerate them but i still always do!
