Whistlewood Farm B&B

For our anniversary, we decided to visit the Hudson Valley where we both spent a ton of time as kids. We decided to stay at Whistlewood Farm Bed and Breakfast in Rhinebeck, NY (We chose Rhinebeck as the destination right before Chelsea Clinton coincidentally got married there!). It was our first time at a bed and breakfast and I wasn’t sure what to expect.  I’m happy to say it was one of the best experiences we’ve had staying anywhere away from home.

We felt instantly at peace from the second we walked in the door. The owner, Maggie’s warmth and charm combined with the quaintness of the indoor setting and the pure beauty of the outdoors made for the most relaxing time. No pictures could do our stay justice (especially between using an iphone and the cloudy weather – bear with me, we really need a new digital).  After twenty four hours, we were hugging Maggie goodbye already discussing another stay this fall. It was simply perfection.

The main house where our room was (much bigger than it appears).

The cozy sitting room complete with a fireplace and tons of great magazines. :)

Our names on the door of our room – such a cute touch!

The view from the main house.

They board horses as well so there were horses everywhere! We pet these guys for at least an hour before we left the last morning.

Where we had afternoon tea and homemade sweets as well as breakfast. The tree providing the peaches for our fruit salad was right outside!

The nearby source of our scrambled eggs… you can’t get any fresher than that!

A gorgeous palomino. I lovvvve horses.

We also had a delicious dinner in the adorable town of Rhinebeck at Terrapin, which is in a renovated church built in 1825. The cuisine is described as New American, which is “a blend of the classical French approach with the influences of Asia, Italy, and the American South West”.  The menu had an array of classic and unique dishes filled with very fresh and local ingredients. I can’t wait to go back again!

Quote of the Day

“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, gifted ability, or skill. It will make or break a company, a church, a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace from that day. We cannot change our past, we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing that we can do is play on the one string that we have and this string is, Attitude. I am convinced that life is ten percent what happens to me and ninety percent how I react to it. And so it is with you….We are in charge of our Attitudes.” ~Charles Swindoll

Be a Misfit

I came across this article this morning and really enjoyed it… hope you do too!

Misfit Entrepreneurs by Dan Pallotta

Imagine Walt Disney at the age of nineteen. His uncle asks him what he plans to do with his life, and he pulls out a drawing of a mouse and says, “I think this has a lot of potential.”

Or Springsteen. In a concert he once told the story of how he and his dad used to go at it — how his father hated his guitar. Late one night, Springsteen came home to find his father waiting up for him in the kitchen. His father asked him what he thought he was doing with himself. “And the worst part about it,” Springsteen says, “was I never knew how to explain it to him.” How does he tell his father, “I’m going to be Bruce Springsteen?” {full article}

Patient is a Virtue

My daily email from charityfocus.org touched on a very key quality today – PATIENCE. I really enjoyed and appreciated it so I thought I would share…

Patience is one of those qualities that doesn’t get much consideration — especially in our fast-paced 21st century. But there is tremendous wisdom in it. Patience is what helps us let go of an unhelpful obsession with outcomes and with our limited identities. It is a recognition that our reality is in flux and we don’t always know what is best. Practiced deeply, patience is what dissolves unexamined reactions and habits of interpretation, allowing us to see things in a way that is more real, more whole, more true. But the trouble with patience is that it usually comes too little, too late. We’ve already yelled at a loved one, or thrown away months of work in despair. So how do we develop patience before we actually need it? Here are five practical tools to experiment with. [full post]

Reminder: Take a Deep Breath

For so many of us, the daily stresses of life can lead us to take shorter, shallower breaths. Ironically yet not surprisingly, this kind of breathing only compounds stress in the body, by depriving the cells of oxygen and by not fully exhaling toxins from the lungs.  As few as three deep focused breaths can be extremely calming to your entire body and your mind. So next time you get stressed out, check your breathing - you’ll almost always find it’s shallow and that is the time to stop and take a deep breath.  Please don’t put it off  and remember “Rejoice in the things that are present; all else is beyond thee.” {Montaigne}

Australian Man Prevents Suicides Daily

This is absolutely one of the most amazing and touching stories I’ve ever read. A former life insurance salesman (ironic) who resides across from Australia’s #1 suicide location continues to talk people off the ledge while battling cancer. He has saved 160 people so far.

“He just gives them a warm smile, asks if they’d like to talk and invites them back to his house for tea. Sometimes, they join him.”

Quote of the Day

“Silence is essential. Silence gives you the space to move inside yourself, to listen to your interior thoughts, and to examine how you perceive your world and its contents. Without silence all you do is react to the world around you as opposed to respond to it.”- Carolyne Myss
