If you’ve been looking to be healthier in all areas of your life, an important aspect to evaluate is what you use to scent your home. The majority of room sprays, diffusers, plug-in fragrances and candles all use very unnatural, synthetic ingredients, a lot of which are known to be hazardous to your health. The quality of the air you breathe is so important so why not control it when you can and make some healthy choices!
I love scenting my home with candles so I’m always looking for a brand that uses high quality, natural ingredients to create amazing scents at an affordable price. Blissoma does just that. All of their candles are soy based and scented with 100% pure botanical essential oils. They never use phthalates, colorants, or additives.
The variety of blends is some of the best I’ve seen yet. So far my favorites are CELEBRATE, a spicy and warming mix of wild orange, clove and bay, and LOVE, a combination of ylang ylang, sandalwood, and balsam. Every one of their candles comes with instant aromatherapy benefits upon lighting – another plus to using candles scented with pure essential oils!
I love giving and receiving candles as gifts. What about you?
Everyone loves a nice smelling space, but unfortunately so many of those lovely smelling air refresheners truly aren’t so lovely at all. Most air fresheners actually contain hormone-disrupting chemicals (like VOCs) and since disrupting your hormones is definitely not on a healthy agenda, I highly suggest making a switch to natural fragrances. One really easy way to make a delicious smelling home fragrance involves just 2 ingredients: essential oil + water.
Combine in a spray bottle:
40-45 drops total of your favorite essential oil(s)
1 cup H2o
And that’s it! You now have your very own homemade, all natural air freshener to mist around your rooms, on your sheets, etc.
Some essential oil combinations I highly recommend (all essential oils mentioned are under $10 per 0.5 fl oz bottle and a little goes a really long way):
sweet orange + cinnamon
lavender + sage
peppermint + tangerine
Your home will smell lovely and your mood will be positively impacted by the aromatherapy benefits of the essential oils — definitely a win-win!
I am a HUGE fan of essential oils. From baths to skin ailments to cleaning, there are just so many wonderful uses for all of the essential oils out there.
A new brand that I recently discovered is Scentcillo. I’m especially loving them for these fun blends:
Oracle – A combination of the citrus tones of clementine essential oil with the rich, warm, spicy scents of frankincense, myrrh and sandalwood creates a bold and heady aroma that is mysterious and hypnotic.
Tango – A warm floral scent combining the exotic aroma of ylang ylang with palmarosa and tangerine essential oils creating an exquisite and alluring fragrance.
Shaman – A stimulating and refreshing mix of lime, pink grapefruit and lemon creates a citrus burst of aroma layered with the woody overtones of cedar wood and cypress and the exotic white lotus
Starlet – A sweet floral and feminine aroma of rose geranium and frangipani intermingles with wood and citrus notes to create a captivating fragrance.
Place 1 or 2 drops of Rosemary Essential Oil on your hair brush before brushing to promote growth and thickness.
1 drop of Peppermint oil diluted in 1 teaspoon vegetable oil rubbed on the back of the neck helps to relieve headaches.
Put a few drops of your favorite essential oil on a cotton ball and place it in your vacuum cleaner bag. Lemon and Pine are nice. Rose Geranium helps with pet odors.
To blend your own massage oil, add 3-5 drops of your favorite essential oil to 1 oz. Sweet Almond Oil or other skin- nourishing vegetable oil.
1 Add 10 drops of essential oil to a box of cornstarch or baking soda, mix very well, let set for a day or two and then sprinkle over the carpets on your home. Let set for an hour or more, then vacuum.
How can you not love a spray that is able to lift your spirits and strengthen your body’s defenses? Whether you’re run down or a little down in the dumps, Buddha Nose‘s Booster Spray is uplifting in both respects. I just love that every time I spray it, I feel like I’m doing something really good for myself, which I am! This spray’s stimulating essential oils of Clove, Cinnamon, Lemon and Ravinstsara are highly anti-viral and anti-bacterial — exactly what you need when it comes to warding off illness. Pack it next time you’re traveling and keep some in the office (2 prime opportunities for unwanted germs and stress). This spicy, herbal concoction is definitely one of a kind and a favorite in my arsenal of health and beauty products.
The American Journal of Medicine published a study finding that 72 percent of asthma patients had adverse reactions to perfume. Few fragrances currently on the market today are actually deriving their scent from natural sources (most are synthetic). To figure out if a product is naturally scented, simply look at the ingredients list. If the word fragrance is listed then it usually means the scent was created in a laboratory. If essential oils are listed then the fragrance should be natural. Don’t have time to read labels or want to avoid possible irritation all together? Then go fragrance-free!
White vinegar – removes odors naturally on surfaces and in the air.
Baking soda– absorbs odors. Keep an open box in the refrigerator, closets, under sinks, etc.
Essential oils: 1. diluted in water can be used as a room spray (try sweet orange & lavender or lemon & cedar) 2. add to a bowl of water – adds moisture to dry, inside air during winter months 3. burn in an aromatherapy diffuser (my favorite!)
Soy or beeswax candles – made of natural waxes so you can enjoy the pleasant scent without harmful chemicals being released into the air.
Boiling spices like cinnamon in water releases its scent.
